What Is Organic Farming?

According to the 1993 European Community Regulation and the Compendium of UK Organic Standards, organic farming is defined as:

"Organic Farming - Organic production systems designed to produce optimum quantities of food of high nutritional quality by using management practices which aim to avoid the use of agro-chemical inputs and which minimize damage to the environment and wildlife."

 Let's break it down. Organic farming is the world's oldest form of agriculture. It is an earth-friendly, health supportive method of growing and processing food without the use of artificial fertilizers, pesticide and insecticides that also emphasizes methods of crop rotation so that the life of the soil and its quality can be maintained over long periods of time.

Organic gardening and farming also involves employing preventative methods of raring livestock and animals which allow them to be kept in ways that minimize the need for medicines and other chemical treatments.

Because organic farmers and producers are allowed by law to use only a small and regulated range of external and arguably harmful inputs, consumers, wildlife and the wider environment all benefit simply because organic farming reduces the level of toxic chemicals that enter the food we eat and the land on which we live. In short, it reduces harm to the environment and its inhabitants.

Some of the overall benefits of organic farming include encouraging biological cycles that foster and protect micro-organisms, soil flora and fauna, plants and animals. Popular today are indoor organic gardening, raised bed organic gardening and organic herb gardening. But what has been foremost on everyone's mind is the fact that organic farming produces foods that are high in nutrient density, low in cancer-causing, dangerous chemicals and overall, safe for human consumption. Organic farmers are able to achieve this quality of food because of the natural, preventative methods they employ in producing and processing food.
